Dirt Road Delight

This tour offers the off-road enthusiast an opportunity to explore the lesser traveled route from Johannesburg to the warm Indian Ocean and back again. Included in this very scenic route you will explore Jouberts Pass, the spectacular Baviaanskloof Wilderness area, the Swartberg Pass, Prince Alfred Pass and the historical Montagu Pass.

A delightfully different road trip!

Day 1

Departure from the South of Johannesburg. Our route will take us via the Eastern Free State, skirting Lesotho, until we turn off to our Country hotel.
Accommodation: Bed and Breakfast.
Distance: 620km

Day 2

We depart after breakfast and start of this day by scaling a breathtaking pass and this sets the scene for most of today. We follow the scenic Eastern Cape roads as we continue heading for the coast.
Accommodation: Tonight, we stay in South Africa’s surfing mecca, Jeffreys Bay.
Distance: 614 km

Day 3

We pack up and after breakfast, we head for the hills so that the true adventure can begin. We ride deeper into the mountains on our way to the spectacular Baviaanskloof. We now cross streams, ride on narrow tracks across the mountains, until we reach our destination in the middle of the Baviaanskloof Mountains. The campsite is located beneath a dramatic cliff overhang in a gorge close to the road. The site is equipped with gas and paraffin lamps, built in braai, hot and cold shower and flush toilet, mattresses, sleeping bags and cooking utensils. All you need to bring along are your clothes.

Day 4

We exit Baviaanskloof and ride another scenic off-road pass through the Knysna forests. This unbelievably beautiful pass will take us back to the coast. After lunch at the Knysna heads we continue along the Garden Route to our next magnificent overnight spot at one of the most scenic sites on the beach.
Distance: 250km

Day 5

Today we leave the sea and head inland along a national monument road to Oudtshoorn and head onto the Swartberg Pass. This pass is considered one of the most spectacular in the world. We ride an untarred road with steep zigzags and sudden switchbacks and the most breathtaking views at every turn, until we reach the picturesque town of Prince Albert.
Distance: 143 km

Day 6

After breakfast, we depart from Prince Albert and start of on a dirt road before we get onto tar and head for Graaf-Reinett. Our overnight spot in this remote Karoo village that will definitely be engrained in your heart for years to come.
Accommodation: Bed and Breakfast.
Distance: 390 km

Day 7

We start off heading north on good gravel roads. Winding through the farming area of the central Free State we enjoy the scenery along these lesser traveled roads.
Accommodation: Bed and Breakfast.
Distance: 363 km

Day 8

We depart for home after breakfast. We continue travelling through the western Free State farmlands towards Gauteng.
Distance: 590 km
